I feel like my project and presentation went very well. The only major hiccup was the internet speed failing to load a couple images on my Google Slides presentation, but I was able to makeup for this during the tour of the building and taking care to be more receptive to questions and to explain the organization in greater detail.
To future interns,
Get the big-ticket tasks done first as soon as you can, you'll have a lot of nice free-time after that. Always constantly find ways to contribute to the workspace and always be helpful. My internship hasn't really interested or peaked my inspiration to pursue further fields of classroom education after high school. Though an entertaining passtime, I don't think I'm going to pursue a career or education in music anytime soon.
One of the things I'm the most thankful for at my internship is the time I've given to be able to not only sort things out and improve in music, but the big picture of my future as well. I came to a lot of conclusions during this internship, and I feel like the experiences and the things that happened are really going to have an affect on me and may even dictate the course of my life.
One characteristic that I saw in one of my coworkers that really stood out was with Rich. He once said "It's all about the details". Meaning that getting the job done is about going above and beyond, no matter how pointless and small secondary tasks may seem. I'll take him at his word when he says that the details and little things when it comes to day-to-day work matters.
The presentation process is going to be fairly straight to the point. Once the sophomores arrive I'm going to take them on a tour of the facilities, studios, and rehearsal areas. I'll show them around and explain what each room's purpose is, what kind of equipment each room has, and what I've done to help improve the condition/image of the room/equipment/instruments. My mentor and I both feel like I'm more than well-enough prepared to answer and questions that may come up about the equipment or the organization.
Being an intern has taught me to appreciate the value of all jobs and work positions. I'm really confident that I can translate the mindsets and experiences I've had here at internship into my school ethic when I come back to HTHI, and possibly in my future. The importance of communication is paramount when it comes to any workplace. It's easier to finish projects and get the jobs done, at school and outside of school, when you're able to recognize when you should ask for and receive help and assistance. In the professional workplace, assisting coworkers when they need help is essential to building efficient organization.
Internship has been going great so far. The big idea for my final presentation is going to be a LOT of showcasing focused on the organization and what I've done to improve their image and the quality of the time that students spend there. That reaches everything I've done with assisting in repairs, organization, live-music sound maintenance, etc.
The more I finished tasks, the easier each task got. Eventually I found that I burned through a lot of the harder tasks with the mindset of "Get it done now so you don't have to do it later". This really helped me see things through to the end. Having to go to work is a lot more different than being at school. You've got projects and tasks to work on at both, but I feel like at work my projects are a lot more physical and active. I'm always up and about doing stuff, moving equipment, soundchecking audio, maintaining the instruments. I'm never really sitting in a chair for extended periods of time. But there's also times at school that I miss when topics peaked my interest, and when I found myself genuinely engaged in the work I'm doing. Those moments may be rare, but that just makes them more memorable.
When I go back to school, I'll take with me the mindset to commit to a piece of work or project and not stop until I see it through. I feel more determined and capable now that if I truly put my mind on something, I can get it done.
